SLO KARST NFO – geophysical laboratory in nature
The Slovenian Near Fault Observatory was established in 2020 – 2021. Located in SW Slovenia, in the NW Dinarides, a region still undergoing active tectonic deformations (<5mm/yr). The area consists mainly of highly karstified Mesozoic carbonate rocks and minor patches of Cenozoic siliciclastic flysch sequences. The main seismogenic sources of the NFO are sub vertical dipping dextral strike slip faults of the Dinaric fault system (NW SE and NNW SSE) with moderate to strong (historical) seismicity with occasional swarming events. The strongest historical earthquakes in NW Dinarides occurred close to the NFO, and ruptured the faults of the Dinaric fault system.
